About TADO

TADO irrigation group in Lokichogio, Turkana North is in an arid area with very unreliable rainfall for agriculture. The community is purely pastoralist and rely on other food supplies especially vegetables from other Counties especially Kitale which is over 600 Kilometers from Lokichogio making the food supplies very expensive due to high transport costs.TADO started vegetable production in less than an acre relying on rainfall but due to frequent drought their crops dried and failed before maturity making them incur losses and rely on relief food.

They applied for funds from USADF to sink a borehole in order to get reliable water supply throughout the year for vegetable production using the drip irrigation system. This enabled them to increase area under cultivation from less than an Acre to 8 Acre. They also got funds to set up three green houses and to train their farmers on good agricultural practices.
Results
Since expanding their farming they have transformed the life of their members and the community at large. Members are independent and business minded unlike initially where they relied on relief food and handouts. They have increased food security and income as they do not rely on livestock only. They produce and sell fresh vegetables which are on high demand. From their harvest 20% is consumed and the rest is sold to the community which no longer have to rely on vegetable supplies from far. From their sale of vegetables, members get income to buy other food stuffs they do not produce, pay school fees for their children and meet their needs. Members also fetches water for their household use from the borehole.
