Kitui Industries was awarded USD 100,000 by USADF to expand the capacity of its existing bio diesel production plant to produce 600 liters of bio diesel from the existing capacity of 150 liters. The award also enabled Kitui Industries distribute 105 low cost multipurpose diesel engines to farmers in Kitui County at an affordable price and flexible payment terms. The engines include water pumping engines and generators to power small industrial equipment. The capacity of the engines ranges from 5-10horsepower enabling them to pump water up over a distance of 200-500 meters, they are low consumption. The generators are used for running small industrial equipment such as posho mills. The engines also run using the bio diesel further lowering the cost of operating them.

Farmers are able to grow vegetables and other crops throughout the year providing income from selling them and providing meals for their families. This has greatly contributed to food security in the county. The farmers have also reported improved living standards by saving costs from purchasing petrol since the bio diesel is sold at a cost lower than the market price and takes long time to combust. The bio diesel does not produce fumes unlike conventional diesel which has contributed to lowering the carbon levels and reducing pollution.
