Purchased by Tarakwo dairies October 2019.

Recently Inseminated Herd

Mr. Kemboi and his Son express Joy as they point to a recently Inseminated Herd that benefited from ADF funds

About Tarakwo

Tarakwo Diaries Private Limited Company serves over 5,000 registered farmers majority of whom have been relying on bulls to fertilize their cows. Some rely on artificial insemination (AI) services offered by government officers. Due to the demand size, the government services have been unreliable because whenever called, officers’ arrival is dependent on their location. Late arrivals have often led to failed conception as the cows are often inseminated when no longer on heat, and this is expensive to farmers who often repeat the payment when the animal is served again. Some farmers have had to walk for long distance with their cows to get the AI services and still their cows were not properly fertilized as others received the wrong semen breed, thus getting heifers they did not like. For those who relied on a bull, one bull was used to serve many cows and there were many incidences of disease infections that lead to high treatment costs and deaths. Ultimately, reducing herd size and lowering milk productivity for families and Tarakwo Diaries. Before resorting to Tarakwo Diaries PLC, one farmer, Mr. Kemboi had lost over 5 cows, and his milk production dropped to zero.

Tarakwo Diaries got funds from USADF to purchase and provide Artificial Insemination (AI) services to their farmers. It also employed a veterinary officer who offers the AI services to farmers. The Vet is also training farmers on proper animal feeding and health management.

Results
Introduction of AI services helped control inbreeding and eliminated disease transfers. Farmers also saved money as they no longer had to keep a bull which was expensive to maintain. Farmers are now at liberty to select and determine the exact breed of cow they want. The success rate of the AI services has increased the rate of cow conception to 99% according to all the farmers who got the services. There was incrementment in milk production from 15 litres to 20 litres and 5 litres to 12 litres respectively. This was occassioned by the training that the farmers received. Also, farmers reported that inseminated cows grow very fast and will fetch good prices in the market in case they decide to sell. The farmers are using the revenues generated to build good houses and to educate their children with some affording even to send their children abroad for further studies.
